With a distinctive voice on both tenor and alto saxophone, Matthew Darwin and his trio bring an intimate blend of hard bop and cool jazz applied to a repertoire of both familiar jazz standards and hits from the 60s onwards; expect everything and anything from Autumn Leaves to Ziggy Stardust. Without a drummer present the band delivers a spacious sound ideal for using these songs as a vehicle for improvisation. With influences stemming from saxophonists Kenny Garrett, Joshua Redman, Branford Marsalis, and also pianist Brad Mehldau, you’ll catch yourself humming along wondering why you recognise that song!

Performing regularly in the north west, alongside his trio and quartet, Matthew also takes the lead tenor chair as well as arranging and composing for the New Lights Big Band, and runs a highly regarded jazz jam session fronted by his quartet. He his joined by the in demand pianist Dean Stockdale, who completed a tour of the UK with his own quartet celebrating Oscar Peterson, and virtuoso bassist Grant Russell, a founder member of Mercury Music Prize nominated Gogo Penguin.
